Who was Abdel Halim Hafez?
Abdel Halim Hafez was an Egyptian singer and film star, born on 21 June 1929 in El-Halawat in Egypt's Sharqia governorate. He died on 30 March 1977 in London, where he was receiving medical treatment. Across the Arab world he is known as El Andaleeb El Asmar (العندليب الأسمر), the Brown Nightingale.
He belongs to the same golden age of Arabic song as Om Kolthoum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Fairuz. His voice was softer and more intimate than the great tarab singers before him, and his long romantic songs, written with poets such as Mohamed Hamza and Nizar Qabbani, are still played at weddings, in cafes and in homes across the region nearly fifty years after his death.
The composers behind his biggest songs
Knowing who composed a song helps you choose records by sound:
- Baligh Hamdi: modern, rhythmic and emotional. He composed Zay El Hawa and Mawood.
- Mohammed Abdel Wahab: elegant and melodic. His songs for Abdel Halim include Fatet Ganbena and Nebtedi Menein El Hekaya.
- Mohammed Al Mougy: grand and dramatic. He composed Kareaat Alfengan.
